Extremely Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Reclining Deer Decoration, Stamped "N CLARK JR / ATHENS N.Y.," circa 1850, cylindrical form with squared spout, brush-decorated with a stylized rendering of a deer with elongated, swag-accented body, reclining atop wreath-like brushwork. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Few animal designs by this maker are known. Excellent condition with some small in-the-firing flaws and minor chipping to underside along bottom edge. H 17".
