One-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Daisy Decoration, Stamped "CORTLAND," Madison Woodruff, possibly with Romanzo Smith, Cortland, NY, circa 1867-1869, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a daisy blossom embellished with swags and spots. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Provenance: Purchased by the consignor in September 1988 from Ernie Graf, Grandville, MI. Literature: Illustrated in Webster, Decorated Stoneware Pottery of North America. A thin 2 3/4" crack from rim on reverse. A 2 1/2" horizontal line through base of handle, not visible on interior. Some wear to handles. Several small rim chips. Staining to surface. A few very short, vertical surface lines to base, not visible on interior. A minor base chip. H 7 3/4".
