Fine Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Deer Decoration, Stamped "HUBBELL & CHESEBRO, / GEDDES.N.Y.," circa 1867-1887, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a doe with heavily-spotted and striped body, leaping atop a stylized ground in front of a palm tree. Cobalt accents to maker's mark and capacity mark. Strong color and desirable decoration related to motifs found of John Burger, Jr. pieces from Rochester, New York. Provenance: Crock includes an old exhibit label indicating the crock was loaned by Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Berry. Very nice condition. Water glass staining. A short hairline on underside, continuing 2" up base on side of crock. A minor in-the-firing iron ping to front. Two small chips to interior of rim. Some minor bubbling to cobalt. A small glazed-over loss to slip in middle of palm tree's fronds. H 12 3/4".
