Extremely Rare Albany-Slip-Glazed Stoneware Mortar And Pestle, Stamped "W.J. & E.H. SCHROP" with Incised Dates, Middlebury, OH origin, 1870 and 1872, shallow, thick-walled form with flared base, the surface covered in a mottled Albany slip glaze, impressed at the shoulder "W.J. & E.G. SCHROP" and incised on the underside with a large 1872" date. Includes wheel-thrown pestle with flared base and semi-rounded end, finished with vertical strokes from a potter's knife, the surface covered in an Albany slip glazed and incised "July 28th 1870." The original mortar that paired with the 1870 pestle was likely broken after a couple years of use and a second one was made, hence the disparity in the dates on both objects. American stoneware mortar and pestle sets are extremely rare, with only a few signed examples known. Provenance: Robert and Nancy Treichler Collection, Tallmadge, OH. Mortar in excellent, essentially as-made condition. Pestle broken into two pieces and reglued. Dimensions (of mortar): W 7 1/4" ; H 3 3 3/4". L (of pestle): 7".
