Rare Twelve-Gallon Stoneware Water Cooler with Cobalt Floral Decoration and 1871 Date, Stamped "W.J. & E.H. SCHROP / MIDDLEBURY, OH," 1871, cylindrical jug with squared spout, rounded bunghole, and two applied handles at the shoulder, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a drooping flower below the date, "1871." Slip-trailed "12" for twelve gallons above. Impressed with "W.J. & E.H. SCHROP / MIDDLEBURY, OH" maker's mark at shoulder on front, and a smaller maker's mark, reading only, "W.J. & E.H. SCHROP," on the handles and reverse shoulder. Exceptional size and form. Provenance: Robert and Nancy Treichler Collection, Tallmadge, OH. A crudely-filled 1 3/4" section to surface of proper right handle. A small filled chip to spout and two other minor spout chips. Crudely-filled areas to bunghole. A firing crack to base area/underside on front and reverse. Areas of crazing to surface. Some dryness to cobalt. H 25".
