Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, attributed to William Nichols, Poughkeepsie, NY, circa 1823, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a distinctive fanned foliate motif ascribed to William Nichols during his short-lived Poughkeepsie, New York pottery. Provenance: Warren F. Hartmann Collection. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. One handle with a large glazed-over iron ping and two short hairlines. Other handle with three short, faint hairlines. A 1" shallow in-the-firing base flake. A minor in-the-firing iron ping near base. Staining to surface. H 7 3/4".
