Very Rare Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stamped "J. BOYNTON," Albany, NY, circa 1816-1818, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a stylized floral or "turnip" design related to motifs popularized years later by William Nichols of Poughkeepsie, New York. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed with elusive Jonah Boynton maker's mark below rim. Provenance: Warren F. Hartmann Collection. A large horizontal crack to base area with two vertical cracks ascending from it to midsection. A 2 1/4" Y-shaped surface line to front, not visible on interior. A 1 1/2" chip to underside at edge. Base chips. Several small rim chips. Interior of rim with a 1" chip and wear. Significant wear to Albany slip on interior. H 13 5/8".
