Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Incised Federal Eagle Decoration, probably Southern U.S. origin, circa 1850-1880, bowl-shaped jar with rounded rim, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a Federal eagle with shield across its chest. Unusual form and iconic American motif. A thin 3" crack from rim on front. In-the-firing salt residue on reverse. Provenance: Warren F. Hartmann Collection. A 4 1/2" Y-shaped hairline on underside, continuing 1 1/2" up base. A 1 3/4" in-the-firing flake to top of rim and a shallow 3/4" in-the-firing chip to top of rim. A 7/8" surface crack to left of eagle, not visible on interior. Nicks to top of rim. Residue to interior of rim and wear to interior. Some old paper residue to underside. H 6 1/8" ; Diam. 8 1/2".
