Extremely Rare Small-Sized Stoneware Jug, Incised "N Clark Junr.," Athens, NY, circa 1819-1825, ovoid jug with with heavy tooling to shoulder and spout, the surface covered in a reddish-brown Albany slip glaze. Incised across shoulder with the name, "N Clark Junr.," for Athens, New York potter, Nathan Clark, Junior (1819-1891). As the jug features early attributes in its spout construction and glaze, this piece was probably not made by Nathan Clark, Jr., but rather by his father, Nathan Clark (1787-1880), for his son while the former was still a child. The penmanship closely relates to that found on presentation jars bearing Clark family initials that are attributed to Nathan Clark, Sr. Provenance: Warren F. Hartmann Collection. Wear to spout and base. Some edge wear to handle. Minor surface wear to body. H 8 3/4".
