Exceedingly Rare and Important Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Owl Decoration, Stamped "J. BOYNTON," Albany, NY, circa 1816-1818, ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of an owl with circular face and pointed "horns" on its head. Bearing the elusive maker's mark of Albany, New York potter, Jonah Boynton, this jug features one of the earliest American stoneware images of an owl, a prized motif in American folk art in general. A second owl from the same city famously adorns the iconic Paul Cushman jug cooler in the collection of the Albany Institute of History and Art, which was made directly across from Boynton's Washington Street shop circa 1818. Provenance: Warren F. Hartmann Collection. Restoration to approximately 2/3 of handle. A crack descending from handle to midsection on front. Two base chips. Some staining to surface. H 15".
