Rare Ten-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stenciled Twice "WILLIAMS & COUCH / NEW GENEVA . / PA.," late 19th century, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, featuring Williams & Couch maker's stenciling incorporating a stenciled vine motif. Freehand stripe decoration to shoulder, midsection, and base. Freehand "10" below one handle. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Unusual double stencil of a scarce maker's mark, potted in a desirable large size. One handle with a 1 1/4" flake and a few minor chips. Other handle with a 7/8" chip and minor nick. A small chip to interior of rim. A 6 1/2" vertical line to shoulder on reverse, not visible on interior. A 7 1/2" x 5 1/2" X-shaped crack on underside, including a 4" vertical crack at base on front and 5" diagonal hairline at base on front. A 4 3/4" faint diagonal surface line to right of lower "COUCH" stencil. Some surface wear and flecks of white paint to surface. A 7" vertical line to shoulder on reverse, not visible on interior. Two chips to bottom edge of rim. Minor surface staining. H 20 1/4".
