Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Eagle Motif, Stenciled "EAGLE POTTERY," Palatine, WV origin, circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large stenciled design of a spread-winged Federal eagle with shield across its chest, clutching arrows and an olive branch in its talons, and carrying a banner, inscribed "EAGLE POTTERY." Heavy freehand stripe decoration throughout. Freehand "4" at base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A large sealed Y-shaped crack ascending from the base on the front, including a narrow surface flake along the crack. The right side of the Y continues partway onto the jar's reverse at base. The bottom of the Y continues across the underside of the jar and forms a thin 4" vertical line on the reverse. Some surface lines to the underside, not visible on interior. One handle with a chip to one terminal and two minor chips to its edge. Other handle with a minor chip to one terminal. Some light staining. H 14 1/2".
