Extremely Rare Glazed Redware Jar, attributed to F.W. Schafer and Son, Leesburg, VA, circa 1850-1888, cylindrical jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and semi-squared rim, the surface covered in a reddish-brown lead-and-manganese glaze. Few pieces attributed to this Loudoun County, Virginia pottery are known. Literature: A nearly identical example, recovered from the Shafer family home, is illustrated on pp. 15, 29, and color plate 9 of Johnson, "Shafer Pottery," The Bulletin of the Loudoun County Historical Society, 2007. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced Virginia collection; includes 10/19/2007 sticker from The Loudoun Museum, Inc. in Leesburg, VA indicating it was recorded and photographed by the museum; Previously purchased at the Wyukoop Estate Auction on January 14, 1984. A long horizontal crack at base, continuing onto underside in a few places. Several minor base chips. A small, shallow chip to interior of rim. Light surface wear. H 9 5/8".
