Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "R. BUTT / W. City D.C," circa 1835, ovoid jar with footed base, squared rim, and arched tab handles, brush-decorated on the front with a stem bearing graduated leaves flanking a figure 8 motif. Reverse with two opposing Germanic tulips extending from handle to handle, a highly unusual motif for this maker. An approximately 8" diagonal Y-shaped line ascending from base on side of jar to front shoulder area. A 1 1/4" crack along edge of one handle. A small chip to one handle. H 9 3/4".
