Exceptional Miniature Stoneware Pitcher with Elaborate Cobalt Clover Decoration, attributed to George Henry Davidson, Strasburg, VA, circa 1880, ovoid pitcher with footed base and short, flaring collar, brush-decorated with a two-stemmed clover plant ascending the front. Swag decoration flanking the spout. Dash decoration below the rim. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Few Strasburg, Virginia pitchers of such a small size are known. This example features superb brushwork attributed to the Baltimore-trained potter, George Henry Davidson, who partnered with Strasburg merchants, George W. Miller and W.B. Kenner, for a period. Excellent condition with a minor base chip and a minor chip to molding at base of collar. H 5".
