Scarce Glazed Redware Spice Jar with Lid, Both Stamped "I. BELL," John Bell, Waynesboro, PA, circa 1840, ovoid form with footed base and coved rim, the surface covered in a reddish-brown lead-and-manganese glaze. Includes original, delicately-potted domed lid with tooled accents and semi-rounded finial. This work exhibits the refined potting of Bell's early years in Waynesboro. Relatively few examples of this form have survived retaining their original domed lid. Provenance: From a forty-year private collection. A shallow 3/4" rim chip and several minor rim nicks. Some wear to base. Light wear to midsection. Lid with chips to edge and flange on underside and a tiny spot of wear to tip of finial. H (including lid) 8 1/2".
