Rare Miniature Glazed Redware Pitcher and Bowl Set with Potter's Stamp, Stamped "JOHN BELL," Waynesboro, PA origin, circa 1840-1880, ovoid bowl with footed base and thin, semi-rounded rim, the exterior decorated with sponged manganese and entire surface covered in a clear lead glaze. Underside of bowl impressed with John Bell maker's mark between an incised X and a highly unusual stamp of a relief cross within a rectangle, likely indicating a piecemeal potter's work. Bowl includes its original wheel-thrown pitcher, ornately-potted with an ovoid waist, broad, upswept spout, and arched strap handle, featuring a matching glaze scheme. The pitcher does not bear a John Bell maker's mark, but includes the same cross stamp as seen on the bowl, indicating the two pieces were made as a set. A fine lot surviving in exemplary condition, intriguing in its inclusion of a mysterious potter's stamp. Bowl in excellent, essentially as-made condition. Pitcher in excellent condition with minor wear to spout. Both retain a brilliant, like-new luster. H (of pitcher) 4 1/2" ; Dimensions (of bowl): H 1 3/4" x Diam. 5".
