Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Water Cooler with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Philadelphia, PA origin, probably Remmey family, circa 1850, cylindrical form with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, squared rim, applied lug handles, and tubular bunghole; brush-decorated with a large three-stemmed flowering plant ascending from the bunghole. Cobalt highlights around bunghole and at handle terminals. A curving line of cobalt beneath each handle. Reverse with a large fan-shaped floral motif. Outstanding decoration and exceptional size. Two short, minor lines to bunghole. A tiny chip to interior of bunghole. Rim chips. Hairlines in underside. Interior base with a worn spot to center and edge of interior wall. A 1 1/2" in-the-firing flake to underside at edge and a small piece of adhered clay to underside. H 11 3/4".
