Rare Two-Gallon Iron-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stamped "D.C," American, first quarter 19th century, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and rounded lug handles with depressed terminals, the exterior surface coated in a dipped iron-oxide solution under a clear salt glaze. Albany-slip-glazed interior. Shoulder with rare "D.C" maker's mark within a dashed rectangular border. Stamped two-gallon capacity mark above. An early work by an as-yet-unidentified potter, aspects of whose work relate to various areas of American stoneware production. Essentially as-made condition with a 3 1/4" in-the-firing contact mark to front including clay residue, a 1 3/4" in-the-firing contact mark to reverse, and a 1" in-the-firing contact mark below handle. Bubbling to clay. A small in-the-firing chip to one handle terminal. A few minor rim chips. H 11".
