Rare Large-Sized Handled Spittoon with Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to R.J. Grier, Chester County, PA, circa 1880, cylindrical form with footed base, recessed circular opening in top, carved oval opening at shoulder, and applied lug handles; brush-decorated with two drooping floral motifs flanking the opening at the shoulder and two additional floral motifs on the reverse. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals and a wavy line of cobalt below each handle. Top surface coated in Albany slip. One of only two Grier spittoons in this size and handled form that we have offered. Provenance: From a fifty-year West Virginia collection. A long, sealed Y-shaped crack to top of spittoon, extending 3" down side of spittoon and running approximately 2 1/2" below one handle. Shallow, but heavy, chipping to one handle. Lesser shallow chipping to opposite handle. Diam. 11 1/2" ; H 6".
