Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Presentation Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Inscribed "Thomas Loker," Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1840, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and semi-squared rim, featuring the incised and cobalt-highlighted name, "Thomas Loker," within a brushed cobalt slip border. Brushed swag-and-hanging-flower decoration around shoulder and swags below inscribed name. Thomas Loker (1798-1876) was a very prominent landowner in St. Mary's County, Maryland. This jar, clearly fashioned to be used in association with his vast holdings in the area, falls in line beside other well-known Baltimore-made plantation jars bearing names such as "Airville" and "White Marsh." Rim chips. A spider crack underside forming a 10 1/2" sealed vertical crack on front. A few salt drips to surface. Small traces old white paint. The notation, "II," was carved into the clay on the front after the firing. H 13 5/8".
