Very Rare Glazed Stoneware Figure of a Reclining Spaniel, attributed to The Donaghho Company, Parkersburg, WV, late 19th century, molded figure of a curly-coated spaniel reclining atop a stepped rectangular base, the figure coated in amber-colored slip with cobalt-highlighted eyes, the base covered in a Bristol slip glaze. Incised details to muzzle and paws. This figure was copied from the well-known Jane Lew, West Virginia reclining dog figure, a form typically found with brown Albany slip glaze. It is slightly smaller than Jane Lew examples, indicating it was not made from the original mold, but rather from a mold produced from a Jane Lew figure. As molded ceramic forms traveled from pottery to pottery in 19th century America, it is possible that the dog used to make this piece's second generation mold was brought to Parkersburg by an itinerant potter previously employed eighty miles east in Jane Lew. A Donaghho lion with closely-related glaze was sold as lot 200 in Crocker Farm, Inc.'s October 16, 2016 auction. This dog is the first example of its kind that we have offered. Excellent condition with a minor chip to one corner of base. L 8 1/8".
