Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Grapes Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX. / HARRISBURG .PA," circa 1865, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a grapevine bearing a cluster of eight grapes, flanked by looping tendrils and two leaves. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Includes original salt-glazed lid, impressed with the same two-gallon capacity mark as seen on the jar. Jar in very nice condition. A few minor chips to rim on reverse. A minor nick to inner rim for lid. A small base chip. A 2 1/4" inverted Y-shaped surface line near base on far right side of jar's front, not visible on interior. Some very faint surface crazing near base on right side of jar, not visible on interior. Some light staining to surface. Reverse with stained trace of old price, "7.50." Lid with some water glass staining to surface, in otherwise excellent condition. H (of jar) 11 3/8".
