Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Impressed Floral Motifs, Stamped "C. CROLIUS / MANUFACTURER / MANHATTAN-WELLS / NEW-YORK," early 19th century, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and flared rim, the front decorated with a large-sized Clarkson Crolius, Sr. maker's mark above an impressed flower blossom motif. Reverse decorated with same floral motif impressed four times, an unusual treatment. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and impressed designs. Desirable form, size, and decoration. Provenance: A recently-surfaced example, originally found by a member of the consignor's family in Ridgefield, CT. Rim and base chips. A fairly tight spider crack to shoulder/midsection on right side of jar. A small piece of adhered clay to shoulder on front. H 10".
