Outstanding Six-Gallon Double-Handled Stoneware Jug-Form Cooler with Cobalt Pecking Chicken Decoration, Stamped "NEW YORK / STONEWARE CO.," Ft. Edward, NY origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jug with squared spout, two applied, open handles at the shoulder, and circular bunghole at base, the midsection featuring a large slip-trailed design of a pecking chicken with upswept tail and swag-decorated body, perched atop a floral spray with two stylized circular blossoms, leaves, and several dotted trails. Featuring exceptional size, form, and color, this work ranks among the finest New York State pieces known bearing a single pecking chicken, one of the region's most iconic motifs. Provenance: Purchased by a relative of the consignor at Crocker Farm, November 5, 2005, lot 160. At its time of sale, this work is believed to have set a record for a New York State stoneware piece with single pecking chicken at $12,540 including buyer's premium.
