Rare Stoneware Face Harvest Jug, Stamped "BROWN POTTERY", Arden, NC origin, mid 20th century, beehive-form with applied tubular spouts and arching handle, the front decorated with a hand-modeled and applied clay face featuring bulging eyes and an open mouth with porcelain teeth. Albany-slip-glazed interior. Impressed "BROWN POTTERY" on reverse shoulder with a stamp commonly found on utilitarian, Albany-slip-glazed churns and pitchers of the same period. The unglazed exterior of this example is highly unusual and the form is extraordinary, being the only harvest jug from this pottery that we have seen. A tight crack extending across underside and approximately 4" up side of jug. H 10".
