Fine Albany-Slip-Glazed Stoneware Face Jug, attributed to Brown Pottery, Arden, NC, circa 1925-1930, ovoid form with cylindrical spout, decorated with a hand-modeled and applied clay face featuring elongated, almond-shaped eyes with pierced, circular pupils and incised eyebrows above, ears, nose with carved nostrils, and applied mouth with recessed border and several small teeth composed of broken china. Surface covered in a brown Albany slip glaze. Likely made early after the Brown family's arrival in Arden, North Carolina, this work is unusual in its heavily-toothed mouth, fitted with a total of thirteen china sherds. Most Brown family pieces are fashioned with far fewer. Provenance: From a Midwestern private collection. Shallow chipping to ears. A minor nick to bottom lip. H 7".
