Four-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, attributed to David Drake, Horse Creek Valley, Edgefield District, SC, mid 19th century, highly-ovoid jar with arched lug handles and semi-rounded rim, the surface covered in mottled olive-green-to-brown alkaline glaze. Four faint incised punctates, denoting four gallons, appear at the shoulder. Featuring distinctive Drake potting, this jar features a glaze indicating it was made while Drake was enslaved at the B.F. Landrum pottery, circa 1847-1849, or at Lewis Miles's Stony Bluff Manufactory, circa 1849-1865, both sites adjacent to each other in the Horse Creek Valley region of South Carolina's Edgefield District. A 1 1/4" chip and minor nick to one handle. A 1 1/8" chip to opposite handle. Both handles with some additional surface wear. A tiny (3/16") hole in side, leading to larger flake on the interior. A 2 1/4" flake to exterior of rim. A few other smaller rim chips and rim wear. A few typical in-the-firing flaws to surface, including a small piece of adhered clay on one side. Some additional light surface wear. H 13 1/2".
