Fine Ten-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "HAMILTON & JONES / STAR POTTERY / GREENSBORO.PA.," circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, featuring Hamilton and Jones "STAR POTTERY" maker's stenciling surrounded by various stenciled rose, daisy, and floral motifs. Stenciled twelve-pointed star at center. Freehand stripes to rim and base. Base with freehand number 10 surrounded by spots and flanked by graduated dashes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. An approximately 4" hairline from rim on reverse. A 9 1/2" crack across underside, extending 3 1/2" up reverse, where it forms an approximately 7" wide Y. This crack additionally becomes an approximately 4" diagonal crack at base on front. A minor rim chip. Some staining. Jar rim is out-of-round. H 21".
