Exceptional Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Profuse Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "H.M. WHITMAN / HAVANA, N. Y.," circa 1859-1862, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a large flowering plant bearing six open-centered tulips and series of graduated swags. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Among the most heavily-decorated examples of Havana, New York stoneware known. Provenance: Collection of Allen F. Sweet, author of The Stoneware of Havana, N.Y. and its Makers 1850-1888, illustrated on the cover and p. 55. A copy of this book is included with this lot. Fry to cobalt. Small chips to interior of rim and inner rim for lid. A large X-shaped crack underside, extending onto base in three places, forming a 2 1/2" T-shaped crack on front, a 3" x 4 1/2" T on side of churn, and a 1 1/2" line on reverse. A 2" horizontal Y-shaped line to reverse. Minor traces of old black paint. H 18".
