Extremely Rare One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Wreath Decoration, Stamped "J.B. LEATHERS / MT. EAGLE, PA," circa 1875, semi-ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, handle at base on reverse, and pierced clay tabs with wood-and-wire bail handle, decorated on the reverse with a series of brushed swags forming a wreath within wreath, surrounding a stylized flower blossom. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, clay tabs at shoulder, and handle terminals. This work combines one of Central Pennsylvania's rarest and most desirable maker's marks with a scarce and highly-prized form. It is only the second batter pail by this potter that we have seen; the other was sold as lot 36 in Crocker Farm's October 26, 2019 auction. As with the other Leathers batter pail, the form is potted in an unusual style- more rectilinear than typical Central Pennsylvania and New York State batter pails and fashioned with a shorter spout. This example includes its original tin lid and spout cover. Excellent condition with some wear to piercings in tabs at shoulder from use and a miniscule spout nick. H 10 1/4".
