Exceptional Large-Sized Redware Pitcher with Slip Decoration, Signed "Anthony Bacher," Winchester, VA, circa 1880, thin-walled, ovoid pitcher with flared collar and heavily-ribbed handle with triangular terminal, the surface lavishly-decorated with marbled manganese over cream-colored slip and covered in a clear lead glaze. Incised on underside in large script with the signature of Shenandoah Valley master potter, Anthony Bacher. This work, potted in an unusually large size and featuring a beautiful rendering of Bacher's distinctive glaze, is among the finest examples of its form that we have offered. Provenance: Crocker Farm, Inc., July 17, 2004, lot 100. Minor rim chips. An approximately 6 1/2" sealed crack on reverse, continuing across underside and 4" up front. Some glaze flakes to surface and handle. H 9 3/8".
