Rare Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Inscribed "Morgan & Amoss / makers Balt," Baltimore, MD, circa 1820, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and arched tab handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a graduated hanging foliate motif. Incised on shoulder with the signature of William Morgan and Thomas Amoss. Incised "4" under handle. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Among the larger jars that we have offered from the Morgan pottery on Baltimore's Pitt Street. A large section of one handle crudely restored. A wide, partially-colored inverted Y-shaped crack extending from the rim to the underside, where it forms a second Y. A long, partially-colored horizontal crack at base. A network of hairlines to front below signature. A faint 2" Y-shaped surface line to reverse, not visible on interior. Restoration material is crudely applied along these cracks on the interior.
