One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Drape Decoration, attributed to John Swann at the Wilkes Street Pottery, Alexandria, VA, circa 1820-1825, ovoid jar with semi-rounded rim and arched tab handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with drape-and-hanging-foliate designs related to earlier Manhattan motifs. Attractive decoration with unusual matching application on both sides. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Two chips to end of one handle. A 2" rim chip above same handle. A small, in-the-making stone inclusion at rim. H 10 3/4".
