Exceptional Two-Gallon Stoneware Chicken Waterer with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, attributed to Richard C. Remmey, Philadelphia, PA, circa 1880, dome-shaped form with applied watering trough, curved handles, and knob-shaped finial, brush-decorated with a plant emanating from the top of the trough, flanked by two smaller plants. Swag decoration around the edge of the opening. Reverse with horizontal floral motif. Cobalt highlights to finial and handle terminals and a garland motif below each handle. Impressed "2" at shoulder. Featuring outstanding size, unusual execution of the decoration, and superb color, this work is also noteworthy for its remarkable state of preservation, as this form, designed for outdoor use, is often found damaged. A 1 7/8" x 1" in-the-firing flake to underside. Three small in-the-firing chips to bottom edge. Two vertical lines, measuring 1 3/4" and 3/4", ascending from edge of opening. Some expected light exfoliation to Albany slip on interior. H 14".
