Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Large Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "ALBANY, N.Y.," probably R. O'Connell Pottery, Albany, NY, circa 1860, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a bird with turned head and heavily-spotted breast, perched on a zig-zagging flourish with scrolled ends. Slip-trailed "4" below rim. Exhibited: The American Folk Art Museum, New York, NY, April, 1974. A thin, 2 3/4" firing crack on reverse, measuring longer on the interior and including a small chipped section on interior of rim. A small chip to front of rim. A small in-the-firing contact mark to right side of crock. Staining. H 11 3/8.
