Very Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug, Stamped "G.G. WILLIAMS & CO. / LYONS. N.Y. **," circa 1822-1835, ovoid jug with tooling to shoulder and spout, brush-decorated with a wreath surrounding the cobalt-highlighted maker's mark and cobalt highlights to the handle terminals. George Williams was trained at the Nathan Clark Pottery in Athens, NY, and in 1822 was sent by Clark to establish a pottery in Lyons. Few marked pieces have survived, this jug being only the second example that we have offered. A 2" crack on underside, extending 10 3/4" up side of jug. A minuscule nick to side of spout. In-the-firing dryness to surface, possibly indicative of Williams's earliest attempts at salt glazing in Lyons. Minor in-the-firing flaws to surface. H 13 1/2".
