Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Parrot Decoration and Providence, RI Advertising, attributed to F.B. Norton, Worcester, MA, circa 1870, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested parrot perched between two leaves. Impressed above with the advertising, "B. G. CHACE & CO / PROVIDENCE R. I." Benjamin G. Chace, formerly of Somerset, Massachusetts, had been engaged there with his brother, Leonard, in the stoneware potting firm of L. & B.G. Chace. Moving to Providence, he continued to deal in stoneware but settled into a grocery business; at this phase in his career he was clearly having stoneware made by the Norton family's Worcester manufactory for sale in his grocery store. Some fry to cobalt and staining to surface. H 12".
