Rare Slip-Decorated Redware Charger, Inscribed "Robert Barkley / 6. mo 25 / 1857," PA origin, June 25, 1857, with coggled edge, the interior decorated in slip-trailed yellow-slip with the inscription, "Robert Barkley / 6 mo 25 / 1857." Manganese daubs throughout. Interior surface covered in a clear lead glaze. Census records list multiple people named Robert Barkley or variants of this name living in Pennsylvania during the time period. Some are residents of Lancaster County and one is a Caribbean-born African-American painter living in Philadelphia. Large rim chips including a 1" reglued flake to one chip. A 5 1/4" x 12 1/2" reglued section to plate. Slip and glazed interior survive in excellent condition with minimal wear. Diam. 14".
