Exceptional Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Dove Decoration, Stamped "EVAN R. JONES / PITTSTON, PA," circa 1875, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a large design of a flying dove with olive branch in its beak. Elaborate feather detail throughout bird. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. This crock is the only example of stoneware from the Central Pennsylvania potting tradition that we have seen featuring this design. Some scattered restored exfoliation to front involving some of decoration. Some additional minor exfoliation to shoulder on front. Two Y-shaped surface lines to front, measuring 5 1/2" and 3", not visible on interior. Two surface lines to right side of crock's front, measuring 4 1/4" and 2 3/4". Two additional surface lines to left side of crock, measuring 3 1/2" and 3", not visible on interior. Chips to interior of rim. H 11 1/4".
