Very Rare Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Pitcher with Stenciled Decoration, attributed to the Whelchel Family, Gaffney, SC, late 19th century, wide-bodied pitcher with flared collar and subtly-formed pouring spout, the surface covered in a grayish-tan alkaline glaze and decorated in Albany slip with two stenciled fern-like designs flanking a star motif. Greenish alkaline-glazed interior. Relatively few pitchers from this pottery are known, this example featuring a highly unusual, squat-shaped form. A thin horizontal crack through handle. A short, glazed-over line to underside of handle. A 1 3/8" rim chip. A 3 1/2" hairline from rim on side of pitcher. A 2 1/2" vertical hairline at base on front, continuing 3/4" onto underside. Wear to top edge of spout. Light surface wear to left side of pitcher. H 9".
