Exceptional Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Alkaline Glaze and Brown-Slip Floral Decoration, attributed to the Whelchel Family, Gaffney, SC, late 19th century, ovoid jar with flared collar and horizontal strap handles, the surface covered in a green alkaline glaze and decorated in brown slip with a stenciled design of a flower with elaborate border. The jar's combination of stylish potting, bold stenciling, and small size rank it among the finest examples of Upstate South Carolina stoneware that we have offered. Shallow rim chips. Minor wear to recessed inner rim. A long firing crack to interior, visible as a recessed fissure on reverse. Additional in-the-firing surface crazing to reverse. A 1" glazed-over surface line to interior of rim. H 10".
