Fine Five-Gallon Double-Handled Stoneware Jug with Alkaline Glaze, Edgefield District, SC, probably Pottersville Pottery, possibly David Drake, circa 1820-1840, highly-ovoid jug with tooled spout and two open handles applied at the shoulder, the surface covered in a light-colored, gray-green alkaline glaze with runs to one side. Shoulder incised with five punctates. Base incised with two slash marks. Possibly an early product of the enslaved African-American potter, Dave. The spout construction, two incised slash marks at the base, and punctates denoting gallonage are all associated with his work. Note the similarity between this jug and the January 29th, 1840 jug with rhyming couplet, inscribed "L. Miles / Dave," in the collection of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Desirable form and size. Spout chips. A 7" vertical line extending from base on front. Some faint surface crazing to midsection, presumably in-the-firing. A 1 1/4" base chip and a smaller chip to underside at edge. H 18".
