Rare and Fine Anna Pottery Stoneware Pig Flask, Wallace and Cornwall Kirkpatrick, Anna, Illinois, circa 1880, molded in the form of a reclining pig with hole at rear, incised details to face and hooves, and anatomically-correct underside. Surface covered in a lightly-applied, mottled Albany slip glaze and incised on one side with the slogan "St. Louis the future Capital / Railroad & River Guide / With a little good Old Rye in". Remainder of pig incised with a detailed map of the Midwest, including the following landmarks: Cairo, Miss River, Chester, Grand Tower, Tolono, Mattoon, Effingham, Odin, Centralia, Ashley, Tamaroa, Duquoin, Carbondale, Mounds, Ohio River, Anna Pottery, Cincinnati the Porkopolis, and Chicago the Corn Crib of the World. The light application of Albany slip on this example is an unusual treatment, allowing the incised map to be exceptionally crisp and visible. The pig's delicately-painted eyes, which include lashes, are the best that we have seen on an Anna example.
