Rare Anna Pottery Salt-Glazed Stoneware Pig Flask, Wallace and Cornwall Kirkpatrick, Anna, IL, circa 1885, molded in the form of a reclining pig with spout at rear, incised details to eyes and hooves, and anatomically-correct underside, incised in large penmanship with the cobalt-highlighted inscription, "From Egypt with a / little good old Rye in a hog's-." This flask, fired in the desirable salt-glazed medium, is the first bearing this inscription that we have seen. While possibly also a pun pretending the pig is an ancient artifact from the country, Egypt, the inscription was likely written to advertise a merchant in one of the many United States cities named Egypt. American cities by that name can be found in Arkansas, Idaho, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky, among others. Provenance: Recently surfaced in the Western U.S. A large chip to one ear. Otherwise excellent condition. L 7 1/2".
