Rare Redware Dish with Three-Color Slip Decoration, probably John Snavely, Hagerstown, MD or possibly Shepherdstown, WV, circa 1805-1820, with rounded walls and semi-rounded rim, the interior slip-cup-decorated with three bands of manganese slip, accented with short curved trails of white slip, and overlain with sea-green copper slip, all applied under a clear lead glaze. The dish's form and double-circle incising on the underside link it to the marked "J S" dish in this auction. Excellent three-color glaze treatment, using a beautiful shade of green slip associated with the early Hagerstown school of potting. Provenance: From an eighty-plus year private collection. Significant, very old loss to roughly half of rim, which has worn smooth. Reverse with some very old surface exfoliation, which is smooth and stable. A 4 1/2" crack from edge. A few rim chips. Glaze flakes and surface wear to interior. Diam. 11 3/4" ; H 2 3/16".
