Very Rare Miniature Stoneware Presentation Pitcher with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Inscribed "Virgie / 1875," Central PA origin, circa 1875, ovoid pitcher with footed base and angular rim, brush-decorated throughout with various floral motifs associated with the Central Pennsylvania school of stoneware producers, including the Cowden family of Harrisburg, the Miller brothers of Newport, and the Sipe family of Williamsport. Midsection incised with the cobalt-highlighted name and date, "Virgie / 1875." Rim and spout decorated with cobalt brushwork. Stripe decoration to handle and handle terminals. Few presentation pieces or pitchers of this size are known from this prolific stoneware-producing region, despite its large output. This vessel's special production is further identified by the lavish application of various different designs associated with the area. Excellent condition with a few small rim chips. H 5 1/2".
