Extremely Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Floral Decoration and Odd Fellows Inscription, Stamped "R. WEAVER," Ohio origin, probably Roseville, third quarter 19th century, ovoid jar with footed base, arched lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, brush-decorated with the cobalt inscription, "I.O.O.F.," indicating it was made for use by the fraternal organization, The Independent Order of the Odd Fellows. Reverse with elaborate incised and cobalt-highlighted flowering plant design. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Highly unusual inscription, superb decoration, and scarce maker's mark, referring to Robert A. Weaver, who worked in Roseville, Ohio, circa 1860-1880, but appears in the 1870 census in nearby Somerset (Perry County). A fine example of Ohio stoneware from both historical and artistic perspectives. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 17".
