Rare Pair of Slip-Decorated Redware Jars, attributed to David Mandeville, Circleville, NY, circa 1835, matching pair of ovoid, wide-bodied jars with flared rims and rope-twist handles, each decorated in brushed manganese with scrolled X's around the body, dashes below the rim, and a stripe around the foot, all under a clear lead glaze. The first true pair of Mandeville's jars that we have seen, as well as the first examples of featuring this squatter body style. One jar missing handle with large curving crack from rim and long thin crack at base, two rim chips, and various flakes and wear. Other jar missing handle with 6" reglued section to base/underside, the cracks on the underside painted magenta, additional cracks ascending partway up body from base, various wear and surface flakes, and chipping to base. H (of each) 7 7/8".
