Exceptional Glazed Redware with Profuse Three-Color Slip Decoration and Lid, New England origin, probably Norwalk, CT, early to mid 19th century, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder and flared rim, lavishly-decorated throughout with marbled trails of yellow, copper, and manganese slip under a clear lead glaze. Its outstanding condition and inclusion of its original lid, also brimming with slip, are noteworthy. Among the most heavily-decorated redware jars known and an object that showcases the attraction of this colorful ceramic medium. Jar in excellent condition with small glaze flake to rim, a long in-the-firing contact mark to rim, minor surface wear, and a large in-the-firing ping to interior base, not visible on underside. Lid in excellent condition with a small glaze flake to edge and other very minor glaze flakes. H (including lid) 8".
